Sailing West to Go East
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. He wanted to find a shortcut to Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. After about five weeks at sea, he spotted land! But he had not reached Asia. He had arrived in the Caribbean islands, in a part of the world that Europeans did not know existed.
