Around the Whole World
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain with five ships and about 270 men to sail all the way around the world! He sailed south along South America and found a narrow, dangerous waterway now called the Strait of Magellan. It took his ships 38 days to navigate through the twisting channels. He then entered a huge, calm ocean and named it the Pacific, meaning 'peaceful.'
