Pouring the Water
Pour the same amount of water slowly over the top of each hill at the same time. Watch carefully!
BARE SOIL: The water rushes down the hill, carrying soil with it. You can see channels forming as the water cuts paths through the dirt. The runoff water at the bottom is brown and muddy. A lot of soil washed away!
PLANTED SOIL: The water flows more slowly through the grass. The grass stems slow the water down. Much less soil washes away. The runoff water at the bottom is much clearer.
The difference is dramatic! The bare hill lost much more soil than the planted hill.
