Smart Storage
Storing food properly keeps it fresh much longer!
Fridge tips:
- Keep the fridge at 40 degrees F or below
- Store raw meat on the bottom shelf (drips do not contaminate other food)
- Keep fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawers
- Move older items to the front ('first in, first out')
- Store leftovers in clear containers so you can SEE what is in there
Counter vs fridge:
- On the counter: bananas, tomatoes, avocados, onions, potatoes (cold ruins their texture)
- In the fridge: berries, grapes, leafy greens, dairy, meat, cut fruit
- In the freezer: anything you will not use within a few days!
Freezer magic: The freezer is your food-waste-fighting superpower! Almost anything can be frozen:
- Bread (lasts months frozen instead of days on the counter)
- Ripe bananas (peel first, freeze for smoothies)
- Leftover soup or chili (freeze in portions)
- Vegetables about to go bad (blanch and freeze)
- Cooked rice and pasta (freeze in bags)
The freezer stops time for food. It will not get any worse in the freezer, no matter how long it stays.
