Food and Culture
Every country in the world has its own special foods! Food is one of the most important parts of any culture because it connects families, celebrates traditions, and brings people together.
Why do different countries eat different foods? Three main reasons:
1. GEOGRAPHY: People eat what grows near them. Countries near the ocean eat lots of fish. Countries with grasslands raise cattle. Countries with warm climates grow tropical fruits.
2. CLIMATE: Hot countries often use spices to flavor food (and historically to preserve it before refrigerators). Cold countries eat hearty, warm foods like stews.
3. TRADITION: Recipes are passed down through families for generations. Grandmothers teach grandchildren how to cook traditional dishes. These recipes tell the story of a culture.
When you eat food from another country, you are tasting their culture! It is one of the most delicious ways to learn about the world.
