When You Get a Cut or Scrape
Cuts and scrapes happen to everyone β especially active kids! A cut is when something sharp breaks through your skin. A scrape (also called an abrasion) is when your skin rubs against a rough surface, like when you fall on pavement.
Most small cuts and scrapes are minor injuries that you can help take care of yourself (with an adult nearby). Here are the 3 steps:
Step 1 β CLEAN: Wash the cut gently with clean water and mild soap. This removes dirt and germs from the wound. It might sting a little, but cleaning is the most important step because it prevents infection.
Step 2 β PROTECT: If available, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin). This helps prevent infection and keeps the wound moist for better healing.
Step 3 β COVER: Put a band-aid or adhesive bandage over the cut. This protects it from dirt and germs while it heals. Change the bandage daily or whenever it gets wet or dirty.
Always tell an adult when you get a cut, even a small one. They can help you clean it properly and decide if it needs more care.
