Traffic Light System for Injuries
Think of injuries like a traffic light:
GREEN LIGHT β You can help handle it (with adult knowledge):
- Tiny paper cuts
- Small scrapes with very little bleeding
- Minor bumps and bruises
- Insect bites (not allergic reactions)
Action: Clean, bandage, ice if needed. Tell an adult what happened.
YELLOW LIGHT β Tell an adult right away:
- Cuts that will not stop bleeding after 10 minutes of pressure
- Deep cuts or cuts from rusty/dirty objects
- Any head bump
- Sprains (twisted ankle or wrist)
- Burns
- Animal bites
- Signs of infection
- Feeling dizzy or sick after an injury
Action: Tell an adult immediately. They will decide if you need a doctor.
RED LIGHT β Call 911 (or have someone call):
- Someone is unconscious (not waking up)
- Someone is not breathing
- Heavy bleeding that will not stop
- Broken bone (you can see it is bent wrong)
- Severe allergic reaction (swelling, trouble breathing)
- Someone swallowed something dangerous
- A serious fall from height
Action: Call 911 immediately. Stay with the person. Stay calm.
