What Is a Genre?

A GENRE (say: ZHON-ruh) is a TYPE or CATEGORY of book. Just like music has genres (pop, rock, jazz), books have genres too!

Some book genres:

• FANTASY — magic, dragons, imaginary worlds

• MYSTERY — clues, detectives, solving puzzles

• BIOGRAPHY — the true story of a real person

• POETRY — short writings with rhythm and feelings

• FAIRY TALES — classic stories with magical elements

• REALISTIC FICTION — made-up stories that COULD happen in real life
