The Four Directions
The four main directions are called CARDINAL directions:
NORTH (N) β Up on a map. Points toward the North Pole.
SOUTH (S) β Down on a map. Points toward the South Pole.
EAST (E) β Right on a map. Where the sun RISES.
WEST (W) β Left on a map. Where the sun SETS.
A fun way to remember the order (clockwise starting from North): Never Eat Soggy Waffles! N, E, S, W.
A COMPASS ROSE is the star-shaped symbol on maps that shows directions. It always has N at the top. Maps are drawn with North at the top so everyone reads them the same way.
