What Is Area?
AREA is the space INSIDE a shape. If you covered a floor with square tiles (1 foot x 1 foot each), the number of tiles = the area.
Carlos tiles his 3 ft x 4 ft treehouse floor:
Row 1: 4 tiles
Row 2: 4 tiles
Row 3: 4 tiles
Total: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 square feet.
Shortcut: length x width = 3 x 4 = 12 square feet.
**Think About It:** Perimeter is the BORDER. Area is the INSIDE. They measure different things!
