Planning Your Composition
A 4-bar rhythm is a short musical composition with four measures. Four measures is the perfect length for a musical phrase, like a sentence in writing.
Here is a plan for your 4-bar composition:
Measure 1: the OPENING. Start with something simple and clear. Maybe all quarter notes: ta ta ta ta. This sets the beat and tells the listener what to expect.
Measure 2: add VARIETY. Change something! Use a mix of quarter and eighth notes: ta ti-ti ta ta. Or add a half note: ta-a ta ta. This keeps it interesting.
Measure 3: the SURPRISE. Do something unexpected! Add a rest in the middle: ta rest ti-ti ta. Or use a pattern you have not used yet. This is the most creative measure.
Measure 4: the ENDING. Bring it home! End with something strong and final. A half note followed by a half rest gives a sense of completion: ta-a rest-rest. Or end with a strong whole note: ta-a-a-a.
Remember: each measure must add up to exactly 4 beats!
