Music from Africa
Africa is a huge continent with over 50 countries, each with its own musical traditions. But one thing connects much of African music: the DRUM!
Drumming is at the heart of African music. Drums are used for celebrations, storytelling, communication (drum messages can travel for miles!), and bringing communities together. In many African cultures, music is not just entertainment β it is a part of daily life.
The most famous African drum is the djembe (say: JEM-bay). It comes from West Africa and is shaped like a goblet (a cup with a wide top). The djembe is carved from a single piece of wood and has a goatskin stretched across the top.
Djembe players create three main sounds by striking different parts of the drum: bass (deep boom in the center), tone (medium sound on the edge), and slap (sharp crack near the rim). By combining these three sounds, skilled players create incredibly complex and exciting rhythms!
