The Emergent Giants
The emergent layer is the very top — trees 150 to 250 feet tall poking above the main canopy. These giants face strong winds, intense sun, and temperature swings.
Harpy eagles, among the most powerful eagles on Earth, nest here and hunt monkeys and sloths below. Morpho butterflies with iridescent blue wings flutter at these heights.
Emergent trees have buttress roots — large wing-shaped roots at the base that keep them from toppling in storms. Some buttress roots extend 30 feet from the trunk!
