What Is a Map?

A map is a picture of a place seen from above, like a bird looking down. Maps show where things are. A map of your school might show classrooms, the gym, the library, and the playground. Maps have special parts: a TITLE tells what the map shows, a COMPASS ROSE shows directions (north, south, east, west), a KEY or LEGEND explains the symbols, and a SCALE shows how big things really are.
