What Are Fossil Fuels?
Fossil fuels are energy sources formed from ancient plants and animals that lived MILLIONS of years ago! When these organisms died, they were buried under layers of mud and rock. Over millions of years, heat and pressure turned them into coal, oil, and natural gas. We dig them up and burn them to get energy. The word 'fossil' is in the name because these fuels come from fossils of ancient life!
