Friction — The Slow-Down Force

Friction is a force that works AGAINST motion. When two things rub together, friction slows them down. Push a toy car on a carpet — it stops quickly because carpet has lots of friction. Push it on a smooth tile floor — it goes farther because there is less friction. Friction turns the energy of motion into heat! That is why your hands get warm when you rub them together fast.
