Feeling What Others Feel
Empathy is the ability to understand and FEEL what another person is feeling. It is like having a superpower that lets you sense other people's emotions.
Imagine your friend falls off their bike and scrapes their knee. You did not fall, but when you see them crying, your heart hurts too. You FEEL their pain. That is empathy!
Empathy is different from sympathy:
- Sympathy: 'I am sorry you are sad.' (You notice their feeling.)
- Empathy: 'I understand how you feel because I have felt that way too.' (You SHARE their feeling.)
Empathy is like stepping into someone else's shoes and seeing the world through their eyes. You might not have had the exact same experience, but you can imagine how it feels.
Why does empathy matter? Because when you understand how others feel, you:
- Treat people more kindly
- Help when someone is hurting
- Stop before saying something hurtful
- Build deeper friendships
- Make the world a better, more caring place
