Dia de los Muertos β Day of the Dead
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in Mexico on November 1-2. Despite its name, it is NOT scary β it is a beautiful, joyful celebration of loved ones who have passed away!
Families build colorful OFRENDAS (altars) decorated with marigold flowers (the flower of the dead), candles, photographs, and the favorite foods and belongings of their deceased loved ones. They believe the spirits of their loved ones come back to visit on these days.
Calaveras (sugar skulls) are a famous symbol β brightly decorated skulls made of sugar. People paint their faces to look like decorated skulls. Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, play music, and share memories.
Dia de los Muertos teaches us that love does not end when someone dies. By remembering and celebrating our loved ones, they live on in our hearts forever.
