What Is a Poem?
A poem is a special kind of writing that uses carefully chosen words to create pictures, feelings, and sounds. Poems are different from stories because they:
- Are usually shorter
- Are written in lines (not paragraphs)
- Often use rhythm (a beat you can clap to)
- Sometimes use rhyme (words that sound alike at the end)
- Paint pictures with words
- Express feelings in powerful ways
Poems can be about ANYTHING: a sunset, your pet, a rainy day, how you feel when you are happy, the sound of thunder, or even a silly sandwich!
The best thing about poetry is that there are no strict rules. You can make a poem long or short, funny or serious, rhyming or not. Poetry is a playground for your imagination!
