What Is an Acrostic?
An acrostic poem is a poem where the FIRST LETTER of each line spells out a word when you read down. It is like a secret code hidden in your poem!
Here is an acrostic poem for the word CAT:
Curly tail swishing back and forth
Always purring on my lap
Tiny paws with soft little beans
See? Read the first letter of each line going down: C-A-T. It spells CAT!
Here is one for RAIN:
Rumbling thunder in the sky
All the puddles growing wide
I splash and jump in every one
Now my boots are wet inside
R-A-I-N spells RAIN!
Acrostic poems are one of the easiest and most fun types of poems to write because the word gives you a structure to follow.
