Simple and Compound Sentences

A simple sentence has one complete thought with a subject and a verb. Examples: The cat slept. Maria rides her bike. The sun shines brightly. Each of these sentences expresses one idea clearly. Simple sentences are great, but using only simple sentences can make your writing sound choppy.
