Building Your Melody

Start with 4 Bars

A bar (or measure) is a group of beats. In 4/4 time, each bar has 4 beats. Start by composing just 4 bars — that is 16 beats total. Your first melody should start and end on C (the home note). Begin simple: use quarter notes and half notes. Write the note names on paper first: maybe C-D-E-D for bar 1, F-E-D-C for bar 2. Then play it and adjust until it sounds good to YOU.
