Mix Up the Rhythms
A melody with all quarter notes (ta-ta-ta-ta) sounds mechanical and boring. Mix different note values to create interest! Use a half note to let a note ring out at the end of a phrase. Use eighth notes for excited, fast passages. Dotted rhythms (long-short, long-short) give a bouncy, swinging feel. The rhythm of your melody is just as important as the notes!
