Hit, Shake, and Scrape
Percussion instruments make sound when you hit, shake, or scrape them. They are the oldest instruments in history — our ancestors made music by hitting rocks and sticks together! Percussion provides the BEAT and RHYTHM of the orchestra. Without percussion, the orchestra would have no backbone. There are more different percussion instruments than any other section.
