You-Messages vs. I-Messages
When we are upset, we often blame the other person: 'YOU are so mean!' 'YOU always ruin everything!' These are YOU-messages, and they make the other person defensive and angry. I-MESSAGES express YOUR feelings without attacking: 'I feel hurt when you do not include me because I want to be part of the group.' I-messages open conversations; you-messages start fights.
