The Declaration of Independence

By 1776, many colonists decided they wanted to break away from Britain completely and form their own country. Representatives from all 13 colonies met at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. They asked Thomas Jefferson to write a document explaining why they were declaring independence.
