Life in Each Region

New England had cold, harsh winters and rocky soil that made farming hard. People made a living through fishing, shipbuilding, whaling, and trading. Towns were centered around a church and a town meeting house where people voted on local decisions. Education was highly valued — the first public schools in America started here.
