The Power of the Arch
ARCH bridges are one of the oldest and most beautiful bridge designs. The curved arch shape converts downward force (compression) into outward thrust along the curve, pushing into the ground at each end. The Romans built stone arch bridges over 2,000 years ago that STILL stand today! The Pont du Gard aqueduct in France is a Roman arch bridge that carried water across a valley.
