Solar Power

Solar panels contain special cells made of silicon (a material from sand!). When sunlight hits these cells, it knocks electrons loose, creating an electric current. This is called the PHOTOVOLTAIC EFFECT (photo = light, voltaic = electricity). A single solar panel can power a small device. Thousands of panels together in a solar farm can power an entire city!
