How Wind Turbines Work
Wind turbines have large blades that spin when the wind blows. The spinning blades turn a shaft connected to a generator, which converts the spinning motion into electricity. It is the same idea as a bicycle dynamo! Modern wind turbines are enormous: the blades can be over 80 meters long (longer than a Boeing 747 airplane's wingspan). They sit on towers over 100 meters tall to catch stronger winds.
