Gaokao English Cloze Test: The Four-Pass Strategy
The Gaokao English Cloze test (完形填空) presents a 250–300 word passage with 20 blanks, each with four options. It tests contextual vocabulary, discourse coherence, and reading comprehension — not isolated grammar rules. The four-pass strategy maximises accuracy. Pass 1 — Read the entire passage without filling blanks: understand the narrative arc, identify the tone (encouraging, analytical, narrative), and locate the passage's central theme or lesson. Pass 2 — Fill high-confidence blanks using immediate sentence context: blanks where the grammatical category or collocational requirement makes one option clearly superior. Pass 3 — Return to difficult blanks using extended context: re-read the two sentences before and after the blank, looking for cohesion markers (pronoun references, time expressions, logical connectors) that constrain the answer. Pass 4 — Verify all answers by reading the completed passage for logical coherence: any blank that disrupts narrative flow or creates a logical contradiction requires re-evaluation. Common trap: options with similar meanings that differ in register (formal vs. informal), degree (large vs. enormous), or collocational range — always test options against the specific partner word in the sentence, not just the general meaning.
