Gaokao Composition: Top-Band Scoring Techniques
The Gaokao Chinese Language paper (语文卷) composition section (作文) is worth 60 points and accounts for a massive proportion of the overall Chinese score. Examiners score on two dimensions: content (内容, 20 marks) and expression (表达, 20 marks) for the primary scoring, plus developmental points (发展等级, 20 marks) for top-band differentiation. Achieving 48-50/50 (converted equivalent) requires excelling in all three dimensions.
The composition prompt (题目) comes in several formats: argumentative (议论文), narrative/literary (记叙文/散文), or new media commentary (时评). The most common format in recent Gaokao papers is the argumentative essay or 时评 (current affairs commentary). The top-band argumentative essay demonstrates: a clear and nuanced central argument (not a platitude — '诚信很重要' alone is Grade C); logical paragraph structure with claim, evidence, analysis, and synthesis; multiple types of evidence (classical example, contemporary example, statistical or comparative evidence); and sophisticated transitional logic.
The opening paragraph (首段) sets the tone for the entire essay. Top-band opening strategies: quotation from classical literature or historical figure that illuminates the topic; statistical or real-world scenario that immediately anchors the abstract topic; or a rhetorical question that frames the essay's central tension. Avoid: restating the prompt word-for-word; starting with '自古以来...' (Since ancient times...) — considered formulaic and reduces developmental score.
Evidence selection: classical examples (古典例证) include historical figures, literary works, and philosophical sayings that demonstrably connect to the thesis. Contemporary examples should be specific (a named individual, a specific event, a verifiable statistic) rather than vague ('nowadays, many people...'). The highest-scoring compositions connect classical and contemporary evidence to show the thesis applies across time — demonstrating cultural depth. Conclusion (结尾段): do not simply restate the thesis. The top-band conclusion either extends the argument to a broader societal or philosophical dimension, or offers a specific, forward-looking call to action that flows naturally from the argument.
