GMAT Focus Edition Format
The GMAT Focus Edition, launched in 2023 as the replacement for the classic GMAT, is a significantly redesigned exam reflecting what business schools say they actually want to measure. The GMAT Focus Edition consists of three sections: Quantitative Reasoning (45 minutes, 21 questions), Verbal Reasoning (45 minutes, 23 questions), and Data Insights (45 minutes, 20 questions). Total testing time is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes including optional 10-minute breaks between sections. The test is computer-adaptive by item β unlike the GRE's section-adaptive format, each GMAT question's difficulty adjusts based on your response to the previous question. The GMAT Focus Edition removed Sentence Correction questions from the Verbal section and removed the separate Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). Sentence Correction and AWA were eliminated because research showed they added limited predictive validity for business school performance. Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning remain in the Verbal section. Data Insights is a new section that consolidates Integrated Reasoning (from the classic GMAT) with Data Sufficiency questions. The GMAT Focus Edition allows you to review and edit up to three answers per section during that section's time, a flexibility that did not exist in the classic GMAT. This flexibility should be used strategically for questions where you identified specific errors during review.
