Why Grids Matter
A grid is an invisible framework of horizontal and vertical lines that organize content on a page or screen. Josef Müller-Brockmann, the Swiss pioneer of grid-based design, argued that grids bring order to chaos, enabling designers to handle complex information with clarity and consistency. Without a grid, each page requires ad-hoc decisions about element placement; with one, the structure is predetermined and the designer focuses on content. Grids also create visual rhythm—the consistent margins, columns, and gutters establish a pattern that readers find comfortable and professional.
