GRE General Test Format and Sections
The GRE General Test is a standardized exam administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is accepted by thousands of graduate programs in the United States and internationally. The test is delivered on computer and consists of three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The current GRE General Test (revised format as of 2023) is approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes long, making it significantly shorter than earlier versions. Verbal Reasoning consists of two 27-minute sections, each with 27 questions, for a total of 54 questions. Quantitative Reasoning also consists of two 35-minute sections, each with 27 questions, for 54 questions total. Analytical Writing consists of one 30-minute section with a single writing task (the Analyze an Issue task β the Analyze an Argument task was removed from the standard test in the 2023 revision). The sections appear in this order: Analytical Writing, then alternating Verbal and Quantitative sections in an unspecified order. One unscored research section may appear at any point β it looks identical to a scored section, so treat every section seriously. There is no penalty for wrong answers, making it always worthwhile to answer every question.
