GRE Subject Tests Overview
In addition to the GRE General Test, ETS administers GRE Subject Tests in specific academic disciplines. As of 2024, Subject Tests are offered in: Psychology, Mathematics, and Physics. (Biology and Chemistry Subject Tests were discontinued in 2021; Literature in English and other former subjects were also discontinued in previous years.) The GRE Psychology Subject Test covers biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, learning, cognition, personality, clinical psychology, social psychology, and research design and statistics. It is approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes long with approximately 205 multiple-choice questions. The GRE Mathematics Subject Test covers calculus (50%), algebra (25%), and additional topics including number theory, geometry, and probability (25%). It is approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes with approximately 66 multiple-choice questions. No calculator is permitted on the Mathematics Subject Test. The GRE Physics Subject Test covers classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, and special relativity. It is approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes with approximately 100 multiple-choice questions. Preparation materials include ETS's official practice books and discipline-specific review books from major test prep publishers.
