Decoding Task 2 Question Types
IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 comprises four main question types, each requiring a distinct structural approach. 'Opinion' questions (e.g., 'To what extent do you agree?') demand a clear, consistent thesis sustained throughout. 'Discussion' questions ('Discuss both views and give your opinion') require balanced treatment of opposing sides before a final position. 'Problem-Solution' questions need explicit diagnosis of causes and evidence-based remedies. 'Advantages/Disadvantages' questions may or may not require your opinion β read the prompt carefully. A Band 7+ response demonstrates complete and accurate task fulfilment: every aspect of the prompt is addressed, the position is clear throughout, and no relevant dimension is ignored. Misidentifying the question type is one of the most common causes of scores plateauing at Band 6.0 or 6.5, as partial task response directly caps your Task Achievement score.
