The Nature of Part 3: Abstract and Societal Topics
IELTS Speaking Part 3 (4β5 minutes) moves from the personal topics of Part 2 to broader, abstract discussions about society, trends, and ideas. Questions frequently use future modals ('How might...?'), comparative framing ('Do you think young people today... compared to previous generations?'), or evaluation prompts ('Is it important for...?'). The examiner's goal is to assess whether you can sustain a fluent, coherent, and complex discussion β not whether your opinions are correct. This means you must be comfortable speculating about unfamiliar topics. Successful candidates use 'buy time' phrases that are sophisticated, not filler: 'That's an interesting question to consider...' or 'From a broader perspective...' β then pivot immediately into a structured response. Silence or monosyllabic answers, even if accurate, prevent Band 7+ scores because Fluency and Coherence requires sustained speech without long pauses.
