Section 4 Structure and Prediction Technique
IELTS Listening Section 4 is a single academic monologue of 4β5 minutes β a university-style lecture on an academic topic (e.g., marine biology, urban planning, historical archaeology). It is the most challenging section because there are no natural conversation breaks and the vocabulary is technical. You have 30 seconds to preview questions before the audio starts β use every second. Prediction technique: for each gap in a note-completion task, determine the required answer type. If the gap follows a determiner ('a', 'the', 'an'), expect a noun phrase. If it follows 'approximately' or a number, expect a quantity. If it follows a linking verb ('is', 'appears'), expect an adjective or noun. Write these predictions lightly in pencil above each gap. Predicted types act as audio triggers β your brain is primed to recognise the incoming answer category. This reduces cognitive load during listening, allowing you to process meaning rather than transcribe blindly.
