Band 8 Cohesion: Beyond Basic Connectors
Band 8 Writing Task 2 responses demonstrate sophisticated cohesion β the way ideas flow and connect throughout the essay β that goes well beyond inserting 'Furthermore' and 'However' at the start of paragraphs. The four marking criteria (Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy) each contribute 25% to the Task 2 score, and Coherence and Cohesion at Band 8 requires that cohesive devices are used flexibly and precisely with only rare errors. Intra-paragraph cohesion techniques: pronoun referencing ('this policy,' 'such initiatives,' 'these individuals'), ellipsis (omitting repeated information: 'Some students prefer online learning while others [prefer] in-person instruction'), and lexical chains (using semantically related words across sentences: 'education... learning... academic development... scholastic achievement'). Inter-paragraph cohesion at Band 8: instead of simply using a transition word, the first sentence of each body paragraph simultaneously acknowledges the previous paragraph's conclusion and introduces the new paragraph's focus. Example: 'While the environmental benefits outlined above are compelling, the economic argument in favour of renewable energy investment is perhaps even more persuasive.' This double-function sentence (acknowledging + introducing) is a hallmark of Band 8 writing that simpler connector usage cannot replicate.
