Australia: General Skilled Migration and IELTS Points
Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program uses a points-based system to select skilled workers for permanent residency. IELTS scores directly translate into English language points in the points test, with higher scores earning more points. The English language points structure under the GSM: Competent English (IELTS minimum 6.0 in each of the four components, or equivalent) β no additional points but fulfills the basic English requirement. Proficient English (IELTS minimum 7.0 in each of the four components) β 10 additional points. Superior English (IELTS minimum 8.0 in each of the four components) β 20 additional points. The points difference between Proficient (7.0 in all four) and Superior English (8.0 in all four) is 10 points β which in a competitive year can determine whether an applicant receives an invitation to apply (ITA). Key detail: the minimum score requirement applies to ALL FOUR components β an overall Band 8 achieved by scoring 9, 9, 9, 5 would not qualify for Superior English because the Writing component is below 8.0. All four components must independently meet or exceed the threshold. Relevant visa subclasses: Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) all use the GSM points test with these English language points. IELTS for Australian immigration: Australia accepts standard IELTS Academic or General Training β IELTS for UKVI is not required for Australian applications.
