Chickens have different kinds of feathers for different jobs! CONTOUR feathers are the smooth, outer feathers that make chickens look sleek and keep water out. DOWN feathers are the soft, fluffy feathers close to the skin that keep chickens warm — they are like a cozy blanket! HACKLE feathers are the shiny feathers on a rooster's neck. TAIL feathers on roosters can be long and flowing. Feathers are made of keratin — the same stuff as your fingernails and a horse's hooves!
