Why We Wash Fruit
Before eating any fruit, we need to wash it! But why?
Fruit travels a long way before it reaches your kitchen. It grows on a farm, gets picked, put in trucks, delivered to stores, and handled by many people. Along the way, it can collect:
- Dirt and dust from the farm
- Tiny bugs that are too small to see
- Germs from people touching it at the store
- Waxy coatings that make it look shiny
Washing removes all of these things and makes your fruit safe and clean to eat. Even if fruit looks clean, it might have invisible germs on it. Always wash it!
Important: Even fruits you peel (like bananas and oranges) should be rinsed. When you cut or peel them, germs on the outside can transfer to the clean fruit inside.
Washing fruit is quick and easy β it only takes a few seconds per piece. A small effort for a big safety difference!
