The Fork
Let us start with the fork! A fork has a handle you hold and prongs (called tines) at the end. Most forks have four tines.
What is a fork for?
- Poking and picking up solid foods like meat, vegetables, pasta, and salad
- Holding food in place while you cut it
- Mashing soft foods like bananas or avocado
- Mixing ingredients in a small bowl
How to hold a fork: Wrap your fingers around the handle. Your pointer finger goes on top of the handle to guide it. Use the tines to poke into food, then lift it to your mouth.
Fun fork facts: Forks have been around for over a thousand years! Before forks were invented, people ate with their fingers or with just a knife and spoon. Can you imagine eating spaghetti with your fingers? What a mess!
There are different sizes of forks: dinner forks for meals, salad forks (slightly smaller), and dessert forks (the smallest). In a fancy table setting, you might see two or three forks!
