How to Spread
Spreading is the first skill every sandwich maker needs to learn! Here is how to do it safely:
Step 1: Place one slice of bread flat on a clean plate or cutting board.
Step 2: Use a butter knife (never a sharp knife!). A butter knife has a round, dull edge that is safe for kids to use.
Step 3: Scoop a small amount of spread onto your knife. About one spoonful is enough.
Step 4: Start in the middle of the bread and push the spread outward toward the edges. Use gentle, smooth strokes. Do not press too hard or you will tear the bread!
Step 5: Keep spreading until the whole slice is covered evenly. You do not want one big blob in the middle and nothing on the edges.
Tip: If your spread is too thick and hard (like cold peanut butter), let it sit out for a few minutes to soften. Soft spreads are much easier to work with!
Practice makes perfect. The more sandwiches you make, the better your spreading will get!
