If you want a QUIET, HIGH sound: use tiny pieces like sand in a small bottle, and shake gently.
If you want a MEDIUM, RATTLY sound: use rice in a medium bottle, half full, and shake at medium speed.
Think about what kind of sound you want your instrument to make. Do you want it to sound like rain? Use rice. Like thunder? Use beans and shake hard. Like the ocean? Use water and swirl gently.
