Foods that Grow on Trees
Many of your favorite foods grow on trees!
Fruit trees: Apple trees can grow for 100 years and produce hundreds of apples each fall! Orange trees grow in warm places like Florida and California. Cherry trees burst with pink flowers in spring and red cherries in summer. Peach trees, pear trees, plum trees, and lemon trees all give us delicious fruits.
Nut trees: Almonds, walnuts, and pecans all grow on trees! The nut is actually the seed of the tree, protected inside a hard shell. Cashews grow on tropical trees in a very unusual way β the nut hangs below a fruit called a cashew apple!
Other tree foods: Maple syrup comes from the sap of maple trees. In late winter, farmers drill a small hole in the trunk, and sweet sap drips out. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of maple syrup! Coconuts grow on palm trees in tropical places. Avocados grow on trees in warm climates.
Some trees take years to grow big enough to produce fruit. Apple trees take 4-8 years before their first apple! That is a lot of patience.
