Tracing a Full Meal
Let us pick a dinner and trace every item back to where it came from!
Dinner: Spaghetti with meat sauce, side salad, and milk
Spaghetti noodles β Made from flour β Flour ground from wheat β Wheat grown in a field by a farmer. The wheat traveled from the field to a mill to a pasta factory to a store to your kitchen!
Meat sauce β Ground beef β Came from a cow raised on a ranch. Tomato sauce β Made from tomatoes β Tomatoes grew on vines on a farm. Onions and garlic β Root vegetables grown in soil.
Side salad β Lettuce grew in rows on a farm. Tomatoes from vines. Cucumbers from vines. Carrots from underground.
Salad dressing β Made from oil (from plants), vinegar (from grapes or apples), herbs (from herb plants), and maybe some milk products.
Milk β From a dairy cow on a farm, pasteurized at a processing plant, bottled and shipped.
One simple dinner and the food came from at least 10 different farms and plants! That is amazing when you think about it.
