Gather Your Supplies
Ready to plant a seed? Here is what you need: a small pot or cup (with a hole in the bottom for drainage), potting soil, seeds, water, and a sunny spot.
The best beginner seeds are beans, sunflowers, or peas because they are big enough to hold easily and they sprout quickly β sometimes in just 3 to 5 days! Lettuce and radishes are also great first seeds because they grow fast.
Before you start, make sure your pot has a drainage hole. If water cannot drain out the bottom, the soil gets too soggy and the seed will rot instead of grow. You can poke a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup with a pencil (ask a grown-up to help!).
