Fresh Out of the Oven!
Sam and his mom just baked cookies! The first tray has cookies in neat rows. Let's count them together.
Row 1 has 4 cookies. Row 2 has 4 cookies. How many cookies in all? We count: 1, 2, 3, 4... then keep going... 5, 6, 7, 8! There are 8 cookies on the tray.
When we count objects, the LAST number we say tells us how many there are. We don't start over for each row — we keep counting!
**Think About It:** If Sam adds one more cookie to the tray, how many would there be? 8 + 1 = 9!
